Barker and Descedndants
The name Barker is generally believed by family historians to be derived from
the Anglo-Saxon word Beore or from the Anglo-French word Berovier, meaning
Sheppard. Many etymologist derive the name from the ancient trade barker or
tanner, or bark for tanning, The name is found on ancient English and earlier
American records, spelled Barcarious, Barkere, Barkar, and Barker which is
generally accepted today. One of the ealiest English names Barker dates back
to 1200. Ralph De Calverhall progenitor of the Barker families lived in the
year 1200. He married Margaret Pigot, was father of William LeBarker. They
carried the name DeCAlverhall for six generations of the manor of Calverhall.
They later were known as LeBarker for five generations. The first Barkers to
journey to America was Robert, who came to the Massachusetts Colony in 1628.
